Summer should be full of family fun – and fun with pets if you have them. But all of that fun should come with making choices that will keep your family safe as you enjoy your summer activities. Here are some safety tips you should keep in mind as you make your summer plans.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
It’s always important to hydrate, but the summer heat makes it especially essential. Whether you’re swimming, hiking or just out and about running errands, you’ll be losing water through sweat. To stay hydrated, make sure to drink plenty of water – not soda, juice or alcohol.
If you’re going out with your pets, remember to bring extra water for them. After all, dogs need to stay hydrated, too! By drinking enough water to stay hydrated, you and your furry friends will be able to take on the summer heat with ease.
Always Make Time for SPF
As wonderful as the summer sun is, it’s also harmful to our skin. Wearing sunscreen any time you go outside is the best way to protect yourself from UV rays and prevent sunburn. Remembering your SPF protection now will also reduce your risk of skin cancer down the road. Even though it’s tempting to jump right into the pool, or tell yourself, “I’m just going out for a bit,” always take the time to put on sunscreen first.
It’s also helpful to seek out shade when possible, which helps you stay cool and further protects your skin from the sun. If you’re going to be outside for a while, make sure to bring a hat or umbrella.
Dress for the Occasion
There’s a time and place for every outfit in your closet, but summer is the time for light, airy clothes. When dressing for a summer day, aim for an outfit that’s both lightweight and lightly colored to keep yourself from getting too hot. And remember – hats are always a great choice to protect your skin and keep you cool.
Stay Cool Inside
Outdoor activities are a must during summer, but they’re done best in moderation. Make sure to take a break in a cool, air-conditioned place when possible. If you’re swimming in the pool outside, consider going inside for lunch or just to cool off. By taking breaks to cool down, you’ll be ready to head back into the heat in no time.
If your home’s AC system isn’t working properly, you could be putting your family and pets at the mercy of the summer heat. Make sure to call an AC company if you notice something off about your air conditioner to ensure it runs smoothly throughout the entire summer.
Don’t Leave Anyone in a Hot Car
One of the most dangerous places for children and pets is inside a hot car. During the summer, the inside of a car can reach triple digits within minutes, making it deadly for those left inside. Never leave any person or animal in a car that’s turned off. It’s not only dangerous but illegal. If you must leave a person or pet inside your car, leave it running with the air conditioning on.
